Programme

Polymers and polymer-containing hybrid materials are indispensable for production of a great variety of products used in medicine. Many drug delivery systems are based on polymers. Polymers and polymer-containing hybrid materials are used for fabrication of permanent or temporary wound coverings, implants and for scaffolds for tissue engineering. From polymers are made elements of biosensors and other analytical devices. Important reagents in medical diagnostics are of the macromolecular nature.

In recent years there are carried on intensive studies on development of nano- and microstructured materials (organic polymers and organic polymer - inorganic hybrids) that could be used as scaffolds for hard and soft tissue. Many projects have been initiated in an answer to the need of nano- and microparticulate drug delivery systems directing bioactive compounds not only to selected tissue, but even more precisely - to the required intercellular compartments. Intensive studies are carried on in the area of medical diagnostic with a hope that using polymeric submicro-detectors would allow designing extra-sensitive, fast and reliable diagnostic devices. In today's world in which fast transportation strongly increases possibilities of spreading contagious illnesses such diagnostic tools are in a great demand.

Progress in the field of polymeric materials for medicine is extremely rapid and thus, researchers would benefit from an opportunity for sharing results of their recent studies and visions on the future of polymeric materials for medical and medical applications.
